Six Product Lines that Led Datto to the Inc 500 List

dattoIn 2012, Datto landed spot #38 on the Inc 500 list of fastest growing companies in the US.  This was in recognition of our 5,554% revenue growth over a three-year span. It also represents Datto as the fastest growing company in backup and security as well as the fastest growing private business in Connecticut. The question is, how could a company that was relatively unknown become an overnight powerhouse in the heavily contested backup market? The answer lies in Datto’s product progression and innovative technology. It was not an easy or flawless journey, but the team’s consistent fight to develop the best technology has placed Datto at the top.

The Goal:

The concept from the very beginning was to make a hybrid cloud backup appliance. A hybrid cloud allows a client’s server to first backup to a local appliance on the network.  That appliance would then transmit the data to Datto’s data center network. The major advantage to this solution is that in the event of a local failure, you do not need to go off-site for files, which could save you time as well as a bandwidth intense restore. Instead of experiencing downtime, the hybrid cloud backup solution will recover right over the network. In most cases, you can fail over and run your server or workstation from the Datto appliance. Datto was a leader in expanding hybrid cloud technology into the small to medium business space. You will now see many types of hybrid cloud solutions today from startups to enterprise vendors.

Product History:

  1. The Datto Classic

    In July of 2007, Datto released their first backup appliance, which is now known as the Datto Classic. This small NAS (Network Attached Storage) device came in 100GB and 500GB. The feature list included customized off-site backup schedules and file restores. It was in a small external hard drive that was easily adaptable in the office and very efficient for small businesses. The product sold well, but had a couple downsides like the laborious build process and its proneness to occasional failures in the field.

  2. G-Series

    At the start of 2008, Datto released the G-Series device line, which is still on the market today. The “G” stands for Gigabit because it was our first unit to feature gigabit NICs (Network Interface Controller). This product was easy to produce and used StorageCraft’s ShadowProtect software in conjunction to Datto’s Cloud Technology. It was a big hit and brought Datto to the forefront of the backup conversation. The G-Series product was our Partners first real taste of what the Datto cloud can really do. Our ability to store and restore data efficiently and at a very competitive rate has helped every product reach its true potential. As our company grows in size, our price per gigabyte has become more competitive, which in turn, allows us to bring premium services to the market.

  3. Z-Series

    Datto wanted to expand to bigger markets, that meant retooling some features locally on the device to handle larger sets of data. In this quest for optimum data management, we came out with the Z-series line of devices that utilized the file system ZFS, which originally stood for Zetabyte File System. This new back end software allowed for more flexibility in storage and gave the user more granular control over backup settings. Although the Z-Series was a fairly short-lived product, it laid the ZFS framework for all of the products that would come after it.

  4. Viridian

    The backup market was changing quickly and being able to restore wasn’t sufficient for businesses anymore. There was the need for the backup appliance to be more than just a data repository. Thus, Datto released the Viridian, which showcased virtualization for servers and workstations. This product helped us reach the business continuity market and we haven’t turned back since. Recovery times dropped by hours and the appliance could also be used as a spare server.  No matter when the actual server went down, you can still schedule when to a do an upgrade or replacement.

  5. Aurora

    Once Datto Partners experienced virtualization and limited downtime, they wanted it faster and more reliable. We needed to make the virtualization process less complicated with no conversions and if we could do that, then we could find a way to test the backup points easily. Our first entry into the “instant” virtualization market was the Aurora line. This used a core and constant conversion process to have virtual machines ready at all times. Unfortunately, the process we used was too complicated and in most cases errors happened in everyday operation. The concept was close but the execution was not quite perfect.

  6. SIRIS

    Finally, after months of development and testing, Datto released SIRIS, which saves the backups as VMDK files. This cuts out the physical to virtual conversion completely. We are able to provide instant virtualization both locally and in our datacenters. Since release in January of 2011, we have sold thousands of SIRIS units and they have played a major role in recovering from disasters like the Joplin Tornado, Hurricane Irene and Hurricane Sandy.

We would have never been able to provide the features we do in SIRIS without the various product lines that came before it. The lessons learned from both our past products and current products will fuel the new innovations we bring directly to our Partners.
